Starry Sky Books is the second stop on the tour for Carrier of the Mark by Leigh Fallon. Each stop features a guest post from Leigh about locations in Carrier, and how they’re important to the story. Today we’re featuring the the equestrian center!
Kinsale equestrian center is in Kippagh, Kinsale, just out of Kinsale town, on the Bandon Estuary. It’s relatively new, with a huge indoor arena, one of the biggest in Ireland. It spreads out over fifty acres and has beautiful farm land for trekking through. This farmland inspired much of the landscape during the trekking scenes in Carrier of the Mark. You can also go for beach hacks, which are pretty special. On a summer’s day in Kinsale, you can come across groups riding through the town heading out over the bridges to Scilly and Summer Cove. I’ve done it myself…many times.
The Equestrian Center in Carrier of the Mark is owned by the parents of Killian Clark, Caitlin’s (Megan’s best friend) love interest. Caitlin spends way too much time hanging around the equestrian center spying on Killian and dreaming about shenanigans in the horse stalls, while he gives riding lessons.
Áine DeRís, Adam’s twin sister, works at the equestrian center. She’s been hired for her uncanny ability to manage difficult animals. She’s a bit of an oddment around the center, but nobody dares say anything as she’s managed to half the veterinary bills and she keeps all the animals happy, so everyone just ignores her and lets her get on with her business.
It is during one of Caitlin’s Killian reconnaissance missions that Megan gets her first glimpse of what sets the DeRises apart, when she stumbles upon Áine DeRís in the Darkness.
That scene, when Megan sees Áine at the equestrian center was one of my favorites. I loved the description, I was able to imagine it perfectly in my mind.
The first stop on the tour was Books Complete Me, if you missed it. The next stop is at Love YA Lit on Friday, September 30! Make sure you stop by and check them out!
About the book:

But Megan is about to discover that her feelings for Adam are tied to a fate that was sealed long ago—and that the passion and power that brought them together could be their ultimate destruction.
About the author:
Leigh Fallon was born in South Africa, raised in Dublin, Ireland, and moved to Cork in her twenties. While living in beautiful Kinsale, her novel, Carrier of the Mark, was conceived. She promptly abandoned her “riveting” career in corporate treasury and discovered Inkpop, a website for budding writers of teen fiction. Within weeks, her manuscript hit the coveted top-five spot and was reviewed by an editor at HarperCollins. A few emails and some hysterical screaming later, she signed her first deal. Leigh and her family now share their time between Ireland and the United States.
